The Anambra State Police Command has arrested the biological parents of twin infants whose lifeless bodies were discovered in a drainage channel at Okpoko, Ogbaru Local Government Area of the state.
Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, described the incident as “man’s inhumanity to man” and a gross violation of the sanctity of human life, while commending police operatives for their swift response and prompt investigation that led to the arrest of the suspects.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, operatives attached to the Okpoko Divisional Police Headquarters received a distress report in the early hours of Saturday that two lifeless infant twins had been found abandoned in a drainage channel along Cooperative Street, Nwokedi, Okpoko.
He said the officers immediately secured the scene, recovered relevant evidence and launched an investigation, which led to the identification and arrest of the biological parents of the deceased infants.
“The suspects are currently in police custody and are assisting investigators to unravel the circumstances surrounding the unfortunate incident,” the statement said.
Reacting to the development, CP Orutugu strongly condemned the incident, stressing that every child deserves protection, care and the opportunity to live. He assured that the command would carry out a thorough investigation and that anyone found culpable would be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
The police spokesman added that investigations are ongoing, while assuring members of the public that further details would be made available as the case progresses.
